I Invented A New Stat!

It’s called “Offense Per Game,” or OPG (yeah, you know me). It carries a .4675 r-squared when compared to team wOBA, and a .384 r-squared when compared to team runs per game.

Using pitches seen per game, it is an estimate of an offensive player’s contribution to his team’s cause. It measures a hitter’s ability to square up the ball and his ability to take a pitch out of the zone, with the former weighted heavier than the latter.

The top three teams in Offense Per Game are, decidedly, the Yankees, Dodgers, and Brewers. Not bad!

More to come. Stay tuned.
